Graphics & Sound:

I first reviewed One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition for the PS3 a few years back. While I did enjoy the game then, my main complaint was about the graphics. Back then, it definitely did not look like some of the other PS3 games at the time. Now, things are a bit different, and that’s a great thing!

When I loaded up Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition on my PS4 for the first time, I was quite amazed. I had read that it would do 4K on the PS4 Pro/PC and full HD on my PS4 and the Nintendo Switch, but I still didn’t expect it to look this good. The characters and world are extremely detailed, maybe even more so than the anime and there is no choppiness anywhere that I found. All of the characters' movements are fluid and smooth. Also, you have quite a few choices for outfits once you rescue the characters. I am really impressed with the difference in the graphics on this new version.

Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition is entirely in Japanese with English subtitles. Honestly though, it’s not as distracting as it is in some games. For the most part, you really only have conversations outside of battle, so you’ll have plenty of time to read at your leisure. The background music in town is nice and soothing, perfect for a leisurely walk around a beach city. When you are in the "dungeon" areas, the music picks up and fits the areas.

Gameplay:

One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition provides you with two areas to play, Main Story and Battle Coliseum. In the Battle Coliseum, you will take on various enemies as you are trying to fight your way to the top to take on Doflamingo. You can earn prizes here, so it’s a pretty good place to fight if you’re bored of the story.

Over in Story Mode, you’ll find that Luffy and his crew have a new friend, Pato. Unfortunately, as soon as they get to the island that Pato wants them to go to, the whole crew other than Luffy is kidnapped. You’ll spend the first few boards trying to get your friends back. Luckily, that doesn’t take too long. Once your crew is reunited, the real story begins. You and your friends Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Frankey, and Brook, are going to be locked in an epic battle to try and stop Redfield, the Red Count, from his dream of becoming the Pirate King.

The island town is your base of operations. They can be a bit demanding though, in that the people will ask you to build them various facilities to expand the town. You’ll need to use the items you collect while out in the dungeons to expand. These places can be quite useful though. You’ll need to expand the Inn first, and once you do, you’ll have more options available. You can rest at the Inn to save your game and you can also add items to your bag to take into battle. The Inn is where you will store your stuff. Once you build a tavern (which doesn’t take long), you will be able to take requests from townspeople. When you accept a quest, you will immediately select a team and go fight. This means you can only take on one quest at a time. The factory will let you power up your net and rod. The pharmacy is good for buying various items. At the restaurant, you can cook various meals and these turn out to be a lot more useful than I expected! Have fun exploring and expanding your town.

Difficulty:

One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition doesn’t provide truly different difficulty levels, but you can change the difficulty of the game by turning on the Easy switch if you’re having trouble getting past a certain point. Be forewarned, the difficulty of the quests does not change. If you just want to get through the story to find out what happens without a real challenge, flip the switch to make your life easier.

Your health gauge is green and the SP gauge is yellow. SP is your spirit. Fill it up to unleash your special attacks. Make sure to keep an eye on both of these gauges. You can take healing items with you into battle to heal you when the health gauge gets low.

As you are going through the dungeon areas, you will come across point that are sealed. You’ll need to examine these Lost Word Points. These can be opened if you find the right keyword. You’ll get a hint on where to find the keyword if you examine the point. There are also three types of Strong Words: Skill, Custom, and Item. These can be used during battle for a variety of effects. You can also strengthen them by talking to the woman on the bridge. Choosing the right Strong Words to take into battle with you can make your life a lot easier.

Game Mechanics:

One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition is an open world RPG with a few tendencies towards being a platformer. You will use (LS) to move around, (X) to jump, and (R) to move the camera. Where you will almost feel the platformer aspect is using Luffy to fly around town. (Triangle) will let you "fly" around with your Gum Gum Rocket whenever you see a spot with the (Triangle) icon to latch onto. I highly recommend you explore town as much as you can as there are treasure chests hidden in various places. When there are enemies around, use (Square) and (Triangle). Hold (R1) and press (Square) to use a special attack after you have enough SP. (O) can be used at times to dodge in battle. You just need to watch for the prompt. You can change which of your characters you are controlling in battle or anywhere in the dungeons. Simply press the touch pad or choose Leader Change from the Pause Menu.

Don’t forget your insect net to catch things. You can boost your net at the factory. Use (O) to catch things in the wild. After you catch them, you’ll have to do a mini-game to lower their energy enough to keep the critter. You can also have a second player help on another controller. Like practically every game, you can also go fishing if you take a fishing rod. Eventually, you’ll be able to cook the fish you eat. You can also plant seeds and farm on one of the rooftops.

As I mentioned before, my only real complaint for the previous version on the PS3 was the graphics. That issue has been more than solved. They did a really good job making this an interesting storyline, one that you can’t get from watching the anime. If you’re a One Piece fan or if you liked this game on the PS3, I highly recommend you download this PS4 version. It’ll give you a chance to play a really good game with the graphics that it deserves.
