Fox Sports Soccer ‘99

Score: 82%
ESRB: Everyone
Publisher: Fox Interactive
Developer: Gremlin Interactive
Media: CD/1
Players: 1 - 2
Genre: Sports (Soccer)

Graphics & Sound:

The opening cinema is a little on the lame side, and the menu screens are ugly and confusing, just like Fox Sports Golf. Aside from that, the graphics for Fox Sports Soccer ‘99 are pretty good. Two graphic touches that I really like are the way the net of the goal realistically reacts when the soccer ball hits it, and when a player attempts a slide tackle/steal, the player leaves skid marks on the grass. Nice.

On the sound side of things, the commentary is average -- but in a brilliant move by Fox Sports, you can choose English or Spanish commentary. To my knowledge, this has never been done before, and makes you wonder why it has taken this long to do, especially when a CD format has oodles of storage space. Way to go, Fox!

Gameplay:

There are various modes of play for Fox Sports Soccer ‘99, from Practice to Leagues and Tournaments. You can also customize teams and create Tournaments and Leagues.

Difficulty:

The computer A.I. for Fox Sports Soccer ‘99 is pretty good. You can choose from various skill levels: Amateur, Semi-Pro, Pro, and International.

Game Mechanics:

The game runs well and the control is good. The camera angles are a little poor, and could have used more imagination. On the other hand, there are many options and modes to fine tune the game to your liking. Another unique feature is that the referees have different “personalities.” I guess some may be tougher, while others may be pushovers. During the time I was playing, I didn’t notice any of these personalities develop. Fox Sports Soccer ‘99 is a decent soccer game with many options and quite a few innovations.
