Graphics & Sound:
Your father will be checking his team schedule and wondering why a game is being televised on a Wednesday morning with NFL 2K. By far, this is the best looking football game ever created to date. Realistic skin tones, actual player faces, breathing frost in cold weather, and even the “Dirty Bird” dance. Not to mention, true digitized stadiums, even down to the pirate ship at Tampa Bay. Did I forget to mention that the referees even reach down to turn on their microphones to call a penalty? For the first time ever, there is the presence of multiple tackle animations based on where your player is hit. Full commentary is present, with some of the best ooohhs, aaahhs, and grunts of the true-to-life counterpart.

Gameplay:
No brain surgery here folks, this is football we are talking about here. You have four downs in which you attempt to move a pigskin ten yards up a one hundred yard field in order to score a touchdown, while a group of extremely tough gentlemen try to hurt you along your journey. For the size and animation of the characters, NFL 2K has some of the fastest and smoothest gameplay ever felt on a home console. You can speed burst, spin, hurdle, body-slam, dive, clip... even facemask without the slightest hint of breakup, slowdown, or misplacement of a pixel. This game runs almost as quickly as NFL Blitz. You have the option to even increase game speed, if you feel it is necessary. However, this game is haunted by a few glitches, such as the second player only being able to call a time out if it is selected with the analog controller, which can cause some confusion. Also, every now and then, you select a play and the game boots you back to your play selection screen. This game would be well deserving of a perfect score, if not for the minor glitches.

Difficulty:
NFL 2K defaults to a Rookie setting which allows for you to put it to the computer until you get the hang of all the button controls. Once you become more comfortable, you can increase the difficulty to Pro, and then test to see how far you truly have come. The challenge factor is also based on the team you are playing. If you are playing with the New Orleans Saints, a match with the Minnesota Vikings may be a slightly difficult obstacle to overcome. And as with many sports games, true challenge comes from playing against a friend.

Game Mechanics:
The button configuration is extremely comfortable, such as left trigger for left stiff arm, and right trigger for right stiff arm, which allows for a quick learning curve. Not to mention the ability to create your own players from scratch, create your own plays, and test them out on the field of battle. NFL 2K is definitely a game to have if you own a Sega Dreamcast, folks.
