Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Score: 90%
ESRB: Everyone
Publisher: LucasArts
Developer: LucasArts
Media: CD/1
Players: 1
Genre: Action

Graphics & Sound:

The 3D environments of Rogue Squadron make this game all the more fun for people like me who like to wowed by visual eye-candy in games. The ships are extremely well-detailed, even down to the pilots. The extra touches like engine glow, realistic explosions with shock waves, and rippling water add to your enjoyment during flight along with smooth background transitions. One downside for the PC version is that a good number of video cards are not supported, so you might want to find out if yours is supported at

Gameplay:

During the game, you are a pilot in the elite Rogue Squadron. The time period for this game is set between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. During each mission, you will be given a set of specific goals to accomplish, orders to follow. You start off by flying the famous X-Wing, but different missions will give you different ships. For example, during Stage 4, which is called Defection at Correlia, one of your missions is to take down an AT-AT Walker and you can only use your speeder to do this. After you have successfully completed a mission, you have the option of flying that mission again to raise your score, maybe win a medal if you did not win one the first time, or you can change ships. Some ships are faster than others, but know that only certain ships can accomplish certain mission objectives. If you are really good, and win medals on all missions, secret ships and missions are unlocked.

Difficulty:

Like most games, it starts off easy and builds in difficulty as you go along. At some points, the enemy will just sit there and let you come and get it, and at other points, they have 4 ships, a couple of walkers, and gun and missile turrets aimed at you. This is not only during the later missions of the game, it starts off pretty early. Make sure that you follow your orders, because if you stray to far off your mission, the game lets you know it, most of the time with your carcass splattered against the canyon wall.

Game Mechanics:

A plus for this game is the ease of control. With a simple 2-button joystick, you can do everything that the game requires. You have the ability to fly with different views, like side view, cockpit view, and 3rd person right behind your ship. The cockpit view is harder than the 3rd person view, so it adds to the challenge.

Overall:

If you want to be diverted from your every day life and just want to blow up some Imperial scum to release some frustrations, this game gives you a great outlet. It's not so easy so all you have to do is shoot, but its not so hard that all you have to do is think.
