The Revolution Won't Be Televised

There have been songs made about the fact that we have a proliferation of television channels, yet nothing worth watching, from Springsteen to Weird Al. Time marches on, but as of late, it seems that the number of channels have increased exponentially, but the quality is no better. And... when you do find a good show, it gets canceled, leaving you with an unfinished story. Annoying, right? There have been a few times that I've said that the best "TV" I've seen lately was on the Interntet. I'm evidently not alone in that sentiment; new producer/actor Erik Mueller believes internet TV is the future of the scripted series.

Mueller's internet-based TV sitcom "Wall Geek," a riff on "The Big Bang Theory" starring geeks with PhDs seeking their fortunes on Wall Street, has already attracted quite a buzz. The show won two awards at the 2012 Los Angeles Web Series Festival. Mueller plays Daniel, a naive quantitative analyst confounded by the antics of his eccentric colleagues and scheming wife. The show also stars Tara Garwood as Daniel's zany New Age co-worker and Michael Gabel as his slick boss. Mueller based the half-hour single-camera comedy series on his experiences as a Wall Street trader. "Wall Geek" streams for free at wallgeek.com.
So is this the future of television? Wall Geek, in particular? I don't know. However, I see Meuller's point and I can see the revolution upon us. With the falling prices of high-quality recording hardware and editing software, anyone with talent, an idea and a few friends can start producing - and airing - the next great hit, without going through the red-tape of dealing with broadcasting companies.
