When Ryan and his boss, Bill Cabot (Morgan Freeman), go to Russia to investigate the nuclear capabilities of the country after a recent change in presidents, they find that three Russian scientists have mysteriously disappeared. Meanwhile, a neo-fascist has taken a hold on the missing scientists, and with the help of an unexploded nuclear bomb, plans to incite a war between the U.S. and Russian governments. And with an imminent explosion staged in Baltimore, he just might get his wish.
Ryan is also dealing with a budding relationship with Dr. Cathy Muller (Bridget Moynahan), whom followers of the books and other movies will later know as Cathy Ryan, and has to convince her that his new job at the C.I.A. is actually more than a cheesy pickup line.
As always, Freeman does an excellent job in his role, this time as the wisened intelligence officer, and Affleck's role while not horrible, isn't anywhere near the best rendition of Jack Ryan that we've seen on the big screen so far.
So far, this series has been released on DVD (several times), HD DVD and now Blu-ray, obviously each of the movies have a large enough following to warrant the constant releases, and while The Sum of All Fears is the weaker of the films, and it is still a fairly good political drama.
The special features are pretty typical and nothing that hasn't been seen before on previous version of this film, but if you've been planning on adding this flick to your collection, then Blu-ray is the way to go.
