This is basically the story of Eddie Cantrow's life, or at least his life lately. The Heartbreak Kid is the story of Eddie Cantrow (Ben Stiller), a guy who seems to have everything going for him, but he just can't seem to commit. His ex-girlfriend invites him to her wedding on Valentine's Day and this just serves to reinforce the fact that Eddie is certifiably alone. His best friend proclaims the joy of marraige, while living in fear of his wife's wrath, so is it any wonder that Eddie fears committment? Eddie's father, played by Ben Stiller's real-life dad, Jerry Stiller, is a foul-mouth guy who can't get enough of the ladies and doesn't understand why his son isn't just like him.
One day, fate intervenes and Eddie is bumped into by a guy stealing the purse of a beautiful woman. Eddie tries to stop him and gets punched for his trouble, but he also gets to meet the lovely Lila (Malin Akerman). He gives her some bus fare after they exchange pleasantries and she is the on her way. Opportunity missed! Alas, Eddie finds a pair of her panties on the sidewalk (her laundry fell when the creep stole her purse) and wishes he had done more to pursue her. The next day, she shows up at his sporting goods store and soon, the two begin a hot and heavy relationship.
After only six weeks of dating, Lila tells Eddie her job is going to transfer her to Norway. Eddie decides to take the plunge and marry Lila so she won't be moved. Finally, Eddie commits and to what seems to be the perfect woman. They embark on a road trip to Mexico for their honeymoon and soon, the trouble begins. Lila isn't as perfect as she seems. She sings constantly along with the radio. She loves circus sex and sometimes injures Eddie with her enthusiam. To top it all off, it turns out she was a volunteer and not an actual employee at her research firm. And she's a bit clutzy.
Soon, Eddie believes he's made a huge mistake. Lila gets a raging sunburn and decides to stay hold up in their suite, so Eddie goes for a drink and ends up meeting the beautiful Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), who he, of course, falls for. Hilarity ensues.
Ben Stiller is always funny, no matter what he is in, and The Heartbreak Kid has some really funny moments. It also has plenty of raunchy moments, which is to be expected from a Farrelly Brothers film. Expect to see a couple of shots of full frontal nudity and a lot of T&A. Jerry Stiller has quite the little potty mouth as well, so this movie is definitely not for the young ones. Carlos Mencia also stars as Uncle Tito, the manager of the hotel and while I don't normally find him all that funny, he was in The Heartbreak Kid.
There are a number of Special Features to be found here and the featurettes on the Farrelleys are really interesting, especially for fans. These guys are crazy and there's one that details how they rose to fame and how they go about making a movie. There are others on their antics during filming, such as the legendary Egg Toss and a Halloween costume contest they had during filming. Fun stuff.
Although this isn't must-see stuff, it's a funny movie. Not one I'd watch over and over, though. Honestly, I don't really see the need to have it in HD, since it's not one of "those movies" with superheroes or epic space battles that must be viewed in high def. But if you are renting, you may as well rent the HD version since it does showcase some lovely scenes of Mexico.
