Scary Movie was released in 2000 and followed Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) as violent murders spread throughout her small town. It's interesting to note that there are several scenes in this movie that are almost a direct, line-for-line, copy of Scream, specifically the discussion between Cindy and her boyfriend, Bobby, at the beginning of the film and then later when Cindy confronts Bobby about him being the killer. This just added to the overall humor of the situation because it just helped to point out the unusual dialogue of these scenes in the actual movie.
While there were plenty of moments where this film gets really close or completely crosses the line of decency, it does a great job of pointing out many of the stupid or idiotic moves that characters in these movies seem to perform over and over again, and there was more than one occasion when I felt like the points Scary Movie was trying to convey just wouldn't have been as effective if it didn't step out of bounds.
This Wayans Brothers film features both Sean and Marlon as major characters, but not necessarily the main focus of the film. Marlon plays a stereotypical dope-head while Sean's sexual preferences seem to be in question throughout the film.
Probably the most disappointing aspects of this release is that there are no additional special features beyond the ones found on the DVD. What it has is good. There are deleted scenes, a featurette and the original theatrical trailers, but I was just hoping for something more. Maybe something about how it spawned off a subgenre designed to spoof other genres. After all, Scary Movie sparked a re-interest in spoof films that have gone on to generate Date Movie, Epic Movie and Not Another Teen Movie, not to mention the several sequels Scary Movie itself has.
Anyway, if you don't already have Scary Movie, but enjoy it or similar movies, then this is good to pick up, but I wouldn't get a second copy if you've already invested in the original DVD release, there just isn't enough incentive.
