Anyway, Saturday Night Fever: 30th Anniversary Special Collector's Edition follows Tony Manero (John Travolta) as he spends his weeks getting ready for a night of dance, drugs, drinking and sex.
As far as Tony is concerned, his life is exactly where he wants it to be. He is the king of dance in his neighborhood, the girls swoon over him and the guys want to be like him. But, as the 2001 Dance Odyssey approaches, Tony is determined to win. At first, he teams up with local girl Annette (Donna Pescow), but soon decides to dump her for a newcomer, the slightly older Stephanie Mangano (Karen Lynn Gorney).
Throughout the movie, Tony and Stephanie will grow together, Annette will start down a troubled path and Tony's friends, Joey, Double J and Bobby C will continue down their somewhat destructive paths. Before the end of the film, one of their number will crack under the pressure and not make it through the film.
This movie has tons of iconic music, dancing and polyester that helped to define a decade. Everything from the classic Bee Gee's soundtrack to John Travolta's dancing makes this movie a classic and just generally fun to watch.
As anyone would expect from any kind of "30th Anniversary Special Collector's Edition," it has a ton of special features. This DVD has a half dozen featurettes that explore everything about the making and impact of Saturday Night Fever, as well as a trip down memory lane as Joseph Cali, Joey, goes to the locations the movie was filmed at to see what has changed. The other featurettes explore everything from the soundtrack and costumes of the movie as well as how the film revitalized Disco and made Saturday Night Fever real.
The other features include a Pop-up video like feature that explains lots of little facts about the film and its cast, and then there is the footage where John Cassese (The Dance Doctor) teaches viewers how to perform the last dance that wins Tony and Stephanie the 2001 Dance Odyssey contest.
Having never seen this movie before, I can safely say that, while the movie is set firmly in the 70's, the story and interaction between the characters (not to mention their troubles) still exists today and can still resonate with today's youth. If you haven't seen Saturday Night Fever before, then you should at least rent this movie, and if you are a fan, then the 30th Anniversary Special Collector's Edition is the one to buy.
