The Glades: The Complete Second Season is the continuation of the antics of Detective Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore), Chicago native who was transplanted to Florida. While I enjoyed The Glades: Season 1, the show has really hits its stride in Season 2.

As Jim and Callie’s (Kiele Sanchez) relationship start to bloom, Callie’s husband, Ray (Clayne Crawford) is released from prison and halts the romance before things even get rolling. Callie wants to divorce him, but he begs her to give him a few months to prove himself. Things get further complicated when he has to go into witness protection, setting Callie at odds with her son, Jeff (Uriah Shelton). Callie is also hired part-time with the FDLE as a forensic nurse, throwing her and Jim together even more often. Callie and Jim have a lot to deal with this season.

When a serial killer from Chicago migrates to Florida, Jim’s old partner, Sam (Natalia Cigliuti) makes a surprise appearance to help Jim catch the killer. Turns out the two were an item back in the day and she broke his heart. Can the action of being back in the chase together stir up old feelings? Sam ends up staying for a number of episodes and throwing quite the monkey wrench in Callie and Jim’s budding relationship. If that isn’t enough trouble for this young couple trying so hard to fall in love, handsome Dr. Ben Avery comes back to Palm Glades and makes Callie an unbelievable offer. The only catch is she has to move to Atlanta. Will she choose love or career?

Aside from the continuing relationship storyline, Jim runs into criminals of all kinds this season, including prescription drug pushers, carnival sideshow folks, snake-handling religious extremists, bootleggers, NASCAR drivers, swamp dwellers, a shady coroner and even escapees from prison. As always, Detective Longworth uses his charm, and more often, his anti-charm to bully his way to the truth, making Captain Colleen Manus (Michelle Hurd) roll her eyes, but smile as he closes case after case. He’s still got intern Daniel (Jordan Wall) working hard and never gives coroner Carlos Sanchez (Carlos Gomez) a moment’s peace, but they love him like the rest of us do.

The Glades: The Complete Second Season has really come into its own this season. I really enjoy the interplay between Jim and Callie and I hated Sam and her interference. But hey, that’s why she shows up, right? I will say that the product placement in the show got a little ridiculous, though. Between the actors describing the features of their cars and Daniel holding a bag of candy conspicuously in front of him to make sure it got seen (twice, no less), it really drove me nuts. I’d be more inclined to support those products if they were simply there and not so obvious. As it is, it’s just aggravating and stupid.

Special features include commentary on one episode, a gag reel, a handful of deleted scenes, an extended episode, plus featurettes on the love triangles in the show and Jim Longworth’s very special style of police work. It’s all good stuff and will be fun for fans of the show.

Overall, The Glades: The Complete Second Season is lots of fun and is really developing into a fine cop show with a light edge. Recommended.
