There are several individuals and couples that are the focus of the story. First, there's Mei (Yin Chang) and Justin (Jared Kusnitz). They have been a couple since junior high. Mei is part of the prom committee. She's been accepted into Parson's School of Design, but is scared to tell Justin this as he believes that she's going with him to the University of Michigan to continue their lives together. You can tell what their issue is going to be from the beginning. Then there's Lloyd (Nicholas Braun). Lloyd really wants to find someone to go to prom with him, but he's horrible at talking to girls. His sister Tess (Raini Rodriguez) continually tries to encourage him, but each attempt ends in more failure than the last. It looks like Lloyd will be going alone. Lucas (Nolan Sotillo) is a bit younger than the guys and not old enough to go to prom. He's on the team with Tyler (DeVaughn Nixon) and really looks up to him. Lucas has a huge crush on Simone (Danielle Campbell). Simone has someone else though, but he really doesn't deserve her affections. Finally there's Tyler and Jordan (Kylie Bunbury). Tyler is the star of the sports team. He and Jordan have been together for a while, but it looks like he's not exactly the world's most faithful. To get himself out of trouble with Jordan, he plans a romantic dinner with her, and ends up burning up all the hard work of the prom committee.
Nova is devastated by the destruction of all her hard work. The prom committee can't help her rebuild it all as they've got other commitments now. With only three weeks left until prom, Nova doesn't know what she is going to do. About this time, the school bad boy Jesse (Thomas McDonell) rides onto the school field on his motorcycle. As punishment for riding it on school grounds, the principal tells Jesse that he has to help Nova rebuild prom or he won't graduate. Jesse reluctantly agrees to the task even though he wants nothing to do with prom. As you can expect given that this is a movie, Jesse really isn't the bad guy that he appears to be and just maybe things will work out in the end for Nova.
PROM has its good and bad points. Actually, the only bad thing about it is that they made way too many people miserable for too long so even when things work out in the end (which you know will happen because it's Disney), you're still bummed out from all the bad they made happen. But on the plus side, the characters are mostly realistic and the plot is one that could definitely happen. I like that the characters aren't all beautiful prom queens and cheerleaders. They're normal people and look like you could see them in any high school across the country. The few adults in the movie acted more or less like real parents/teachers. So overall the movie is pretty realistic, but the happy ending comes just a bit later than I would have liked it to.
There are quite a few special features to enjoy. "Last Chance Lloyd" is hilarious (and a bit sad) if you enjoyed Lloyd's attempts to find a prom date. It's a continuation of he and his sister's attempts to get him a date. I think he really did try every girl in the school! It's really sweet though and fills out a lot of Lloyd's back story that I enjoyed knowing. "Putting on Prom" is more like a behind the scenes of how the movie came about. As you can imagine, the "Bloopers" are quite amusing as they usually are in teen movies. The "Deleted Scenes" are narrated by the director and one of the producers. It's interesting to hear exactly why they chose to delete these scenes. There are also seven music videos from the movie and several more features. I liked the "alternate ending" of the movie in the "Your Surrender" video. It definitely would have been a different take on the movie. Of course, given his look in the movie you'd expect Jesse to be a singer and in fact, Thomas McDonell is the one singing in the "Time Stand" video, so if you're looking to see and hear more from him, it's perfect. It's always nice to have the extra room on Blu-ray discs for all these bonuses.
Visually, there's not much in the movie that really shows off Blu-ray capabilities since there's not much action, per se, but the flames from the burning prom decorations really stood out, not that it was a happy time! Audio-wise, there is a lot of music in the movie, as you can guess by the number of music videos that are extras. The sound quality is perfect, making the music really wonderful.
PROM is a pretty good teen movie. It is realistic and well done. If you're looking for a movie that is appropriate for a family, PROM one of the better done movies of the teen genre that I've seen. I recommend that you check out PROM.
