Boog (Matthew J. Munn) is trying his best to get everything in the forest ready so that he and his friends can go on a "Guy's Trip." It seems like there's always too much to be done though and one by one, his friends have to back out on him due to family obligations. Of course, Boog also has his teddy bear Dinkleman to go with his so he sets off alone, bear in tow. As you would expect, the guy's trip isn't as much fun by himself. Boog decides that he needs to find a place where he fits in. When he stumbles upon a Russian circus with other bears, he thinks that he's found just the place. He trades places with one of the bears there, Doug (Matthew J. Munn). Doug wants to go live where Boog was, where he's the only bear. It's a typical case of "the grass is always greener." For Boog, it really is greener momentarily as he quickly discovers that he's in love with Ursa (Melissa Sturn). Granted, it could be because she's the only female grizzly that he knows, but that's beside the point. Ursa thinks that Boog is Doug and she's not a big fan of Doug as he's always letting her down. Since Ursa hates him, he feels alone once again. Boog does have the llama Allister (Dana Snyder) to try and help him learn the ways of the circus and the woman, Ursa.
Back at home in the forest, Elliot (Matt Taylor) is trying to take care of his kids while his wife Giselle (Melissa Sturn) is visiting her mother. The kids keep asking for Uncle Boog to come back. His daughters are doing their best to keep Elliot and their brother out of trouble, but those two are just accident prone and are messing up a lot. Once he gets to the forest, Doug isn't sure that he likes Boog's life. He was expecting the animals to worship him, but since they think he's Boog, they're treating him like he's there to help them since Boog always has.
The dog and cat pack sees a commercial for the circus on TV and they recognize Boog. They decide that Boog looks like he's in trouble, so they go to rescue him. They're going to run into their own issues trying to get to Boog. Once the rest of the animals start their own rescue group, things look like they might be looking up for Boog's future. Maybe they'll rescue him and Ursa so that he doesn't spend the rest of his life in Russia!
There are two special feature available on the DVD. First is the "Runaway RV Game." You use the up, down, left, and right buttons and simply hit the correct one when you see the wooden arrow on the screen. It's really a very simple game. There's also a Progression Reel where you can watch the movie go from the storyboard to the full animation showing what each stage adds to the film.
We weren't really impressed with Open Season 3. The animation looked more like what I expect on a Saturday morning cartoon. The squirrels were about the ugliest squirrels I've ever seen and it's difficult to make a squirrel ugly! They're usually such cute creatures. None of the creatures were particularly cute. The plot was a bit boring and felt jumbled. The cat and dog "rescue" group felt thrown in and didn't really blend in to anything. I can't say that any of the scenes made us laugh much at all.
