Living daily life without a soul is a new experience. He no longer has the dark thoughts or feels the weight of life, but he also doesn't have any emotion at all. He goes back to the soul storage and they offer him a solution. They can rent him someone else's soul so that he can perform the play satisfactorily. Not knowing what else to do, he chooses the soul of a Russian poet, perfect for the role. But having someone else's soul brings a whole new level of complication to the problem. Can he live with someone else inside him?
Then there's the Russian woman that he saw inside the clinic, Nina (Dina Korzun). She's got a very interesting job and will affect Paul's life more than he ever thought possible. Nina's boss's wife, Sveta (Katheryn Winnick), decides that she wants a new soul and Nina has to bring it to her. Cold Souls really makes you think about what the soul is. Is it something that can be separated and if so, would you really want to live life without a soul?
In addition to the film, there are Deleted Scenes and the Soul Extractor to add to the film. The Deleted Scenes really aren't necessary to the story which is probably why they were deleted, but they add more insights into the humor of the lack of a soul. The Soul Extractor is about just that. They go through how they designed the machine and why.
Paul Giamatti won an International Film Festival Award for his role in Cold Souls and the film was nominated for quite a few more awards, and it is very easy to see why. The acting is amazing from everyone and the screenplay is very well written. It makes you think about life in a humorous way without forcing it down your throat.
