One day, he happens across Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), self-starting PR man with a heart who happened to get his car stuck on a railroad track, with a train barreling down on him. In the nick of time, Hancock rescues him, although none too gracefully, as usual. Regardless, Ray is happy to be alive and very thankful. So thankful that he offers to change Hancock's image and give the people a true hero. Ray's wife Mary (Charlize Theron) is not too happy when Ray brings Hancock to the house, but the two begin to work together. Hancock turns himself in when a warrant is issued for his arrest and shows the people that he has turned another leaf. But when a diabolical criminal mastermind named Red (Eddie Marsan) robs a bank and holds a slew of people hostage, Hancock is released and saves the day. Surely, with his shiny new suit and good-guy image, things would be just fine. But when a mysterious woman from his past re-enters his life, another of his kind, things get crazy. When the two get close, both lose their powers, and this is just when Red escapes from prison and seeks his revenge.
Hancock is an absolutely hysterical movie, in addition to the amazing special effects and really action-packed storyline. Will Smith is perfect as the sneering anti-hero who becomes someone truly super. Jason Bateman is always a delight and plays his role like a dream. It is wonderful to see the transformation Charlize Theron goes through, from hippy chick to powerful dynamo, and she is as beautiful as she is engaging as Mary. Do be aware that Hancock: 2-Disc Unrated Special Edition does have some 10 minutes of additional footage involving a woman Hancock picks up in a bar and an interlude they have in his trailer and while no nudity is shown, adult themes are definitely discussed, so parents beware. Really young kids might not get what is happening, but older ones surely will. For those cases, the theatrical release is also included, so never fear.
Special features include a number of interesting featurettes that cover everything from stunts and special effects, to costume design, sets and even the distinct directing style of Peter Berg. While they were all cool to see, my hands-down favorite was the featurette "Home Life" where the making of the Embrey House was discussed (along with Hancock's trailer). I had no idea just how much thought and design went into every facet of the creation of this home and the character of Mary and I was really impressed. Additionally, there's a digital copy of the theatrical version for you to place on your PC or your PSP included.
Hancock is a true delight. Anyone who enjoys comedy, action and/or superheroes will get a kick out of this film, from young to old. If you haven't yet had a chance to see this fantastic movie, now's your chance.
