Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell is the same 75 minute collection that was offered on DVD back in 2003, only in portable form so you can bring it with you wherever you go. The Best of Will Ferrell covers only a handful of Will's best skits, including his impressions of Cubs announcer Harry Carry, ?Inside the Actor's Studio? host James Lipton, Robert Goulet and George W. Bush. Also included is a selection from one of Ferrell's most famous reoccurring skits, ?Celebrity Jeopardy? where Ferrell (as host Alex Trebek) would put up with a panel of celebrity contestants and have to endure the verbal abuse of Sean Connery.
Aside from a selection of impressions, the UMD also includes snippets of other famous Ferrell characters, like music teacher Marty Culp (along with wife Bobby), Craig the Cheerleader and Steve Butabi (otherwise know as the one of the Roxbury guys). Of course, no Ferrell compilation would be complete without a little something extra... like cowbell. The real gem of the entire collection is the ?VH1: Behind the Music -- Blue Oyster Cult? sketch which has become one of the more oft quoted sketches in recent SNL history.
Overall, the selection of skits is great, though there are a few "filler" skits that I could have done without, such as the ?Dysfunctional Family? sketch with Sarah Michelle Gellar and the ?NYC Store Clerks?. These skits are funny, but when you consider all of the great skits Ferrell has appeared in and see that some of the better ones (like his numerous "Dog Show" skits or "Janet Reno's Dance Party") are cut up into short montages, you have to wonder why the former were included. Still, it is hard to complain too much since Ferrell is so good in most sketches that even other actors are trying their hardest not to laugh (just watch Jimmy Fallon in the ?Blue Oyster Cult? sketch). As James Lipton would say, "We are in the presence...of greatness!"
Of all the movies released on UMD as of late, compilations like this end up making the most sense due to the short running time of each skit. The short running times also make it good for when you're having a rough day and need a quick pick-me-up.
