RX400
Score: 90%
Developer: Saitek

Function:

Looking for more realism in your PlayStation 2 racing games? Try the Saitek RX400. This versatile wheel is designed for use with the PlayStation 2, PlayStation and PSone. This one's packed with features to put you in the action.

Performance:

One of the things to watch for in a steering wheel is controller type. Some steering wheels can be set to emulate different type of controllers. The RX400 offers Digital, Dual Shock and NegCon. Digital is not a good option for racing games, but this allows you to use the steering wheel with games that don't support analog controls. NegCon is a specialized racing controller which offers excellent accuracy. If you have a game that supports NegCon mode, try using it in that mode with the RX400 and you'll see just how sweet it is.

Another important thing to watch for in a steering wheel is its 'play style'. Namely, how you are supposed to use it. My personal favorite is a clamp system because clamps will hold wheels steady through even the most wrenching maneuvers. Saitek's RX400 has a clamp that works well. In addition to table-top attachment, you can also use it in a 'laptop' mode, whereby you clamp the steering wheel to an extra part that comes with the wheel and makes a base for the steering wheel which facilitates lap-top use.

The pedals that come with the Saitek RX400 are not the best I've ever seen, but they're pretty good. By virtue of their design, foot action is more downward than away from the gamer. Due to this, the pedals are much less likely to work their way away from you during gameplay. All in all, the RX400 is a pretty nice steering wheel.

Features:
  • 6 Wheel-Mounted Buttons
  • Gas and Brake Analog Paddles
  • Digital, Dual Shock and NegCon Compatible

  • 10' cord
  • Clamp for Desk or Table Top Play
  • Suitable for Lap Top Play
  • PlayStation 2, PlayStation, PSone Compatible
  • Black / Blue Stylish Design
  • F1 Style Gear Shift Paddles

Drawbacks & Problems::

The RX400 is a pretty good steering wheel. It's not the best thing out there, but the clamp and NegCon compatibility make it among the best. I suppose the pedals are the part I'm least happy with. I've been spoiled by my ActLabs Steering Wheel's pedal cluster with the built in steel plate and freakin' mini-floorboard. That thing has absolutely zero chance of moving under the strain of the fiercest gaming conditions. However, if you're life doesn't depend on whether your pedals move a little in an hour of gameplay, then the Saitek RX400's pedals should do just fine. In fact, they are better than most of what you'll find on the market.
